Why Play Games?

Bright screen, charged battery, and a late night.
It’s time to start swiping.

Thumb twitches for it’s getting ready for the
Marathon, the mad dash to find a companion,
Or something like that.

Those apps are skewed in the favor of women.

Good.

In a world in which women with power are silenced,
Beaten down, and hushed for expressing opinions so,
Let the odds be ever in their favor.

Women rule the world, so why not be precise in picking
Who enters into one’s life or dm’s?

With a steady heart rate and slightly exposed heart,
We begin.

I swipe left and right.

It is in the murky sea of uncertainty and that I hope to
Find at least a few shiny pearls within the depths
Of this bottomless ocean of profiles.

A match!

5'1" with curly hair, and smile that glows
Brightly even in the darkest of nights.
A chemist. So let’s hope we react nicely
With each other.

Unmatched!

But…?

No words were exchanged.

We matched so she swiped on me too
And yet…

My mind begins to drift.
It’s easy, so easy to forget
That behind each smile,
Cat photo, bikini pic,
Or photo in which there are four people
In the profile picture

Lies a person.

A person who may or may not
Know what they want.

It doesn’t matter. The construction
Of this experience is curated, not by
The fates or the gods, but by other flawed,
Questioning, soul searching individuals
Who also seek connection.
